March Madness!

Writer's picture: Newell M CollinsNewell M Collins

We have turned the clocks forward and now our mild weather is upon us! Make your plans now to visit our area! So many things to do! Come early and watch the leaves come out! Enjoy a campfire on a cool evening with friends! Take a walk in the woods as they come alive with spring growth! This is an amazing time of year to be in the mountains! My favorite blooming tree is the Dogwood. The Legend of the Dogwood Tree can be found here. It follows the Easter season telling of the tree being used to make the cross for Jesus’s crucifixion. The beautiful petals are reminders of the blood spilled that day and the crown worn by Christ. It’s an interesting story lending itself to the season of spring.

Interesting fact: The full moon in March, called the Worm Moon, coincides with the spring Equinox! Read about it here. Ok, so it’s a bit nerdy but you can entertain friends and family with this factoid.

I found this site that lists some of the best hikes to see the spring wildflowers. Most are within an easy day drive from Murphy. I don’t think you even have to go very far to see the flowers blooming. The azaleas and Daffodils are just about everywhere. Find a place to hike the woods, like Hanging Dog Recreational area, and just marvel at the return to life in the woods. It never gets old.

The Georgia Wine Highway begins this weekend and runs thru the following Sunday. Enjoy all the wineries on the passport! Even if you’re not a big wine person, this adventure allows you to see the different wineries. Some have terrific views, some overlook vineyards, and others are nestled in the woods. Each will offer different wines and different experiences. One occasion we were invited to the wine cellar for a special tasting and to learn a bit more about the art of making wine. So even if you don’t partake, it’s a fun experience! Volunteer to be a designated driver for family or friends. We all thank you for not drinking and driving!

Maybe wine isn’t your thing. Maybe a craft beer would spark more interest! Take a look at this list of 10 places to enjoy a craft beer in and around the Murphy area. Several places are right in town! Valley River Brewery, Parson Pub, and The Daily Grind all serve craft beer. Check them out!

Just a heads up as Murphy is having their spring festival May 4! Be sure you’re in town!

St Patrick’s Day is Sunday! Enjoy the day! As you know St Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland. But despite his Irish notoriety, Saint Patrick was British. He was born to Roman parents in Scotland or Wales in the late fourth century. According to Irish legend, Saint Patrick used the shamrock as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he was first introducing Christianity to Ireland. Another factoid to share at this year’s St Patty’s Day party!
