This area of the Great Smokey Mountains offers beauty and adventure for the whole family and the town of Murphy will remind you of Mayberry of the Andy Griffith show.
A short stroll down the sidewalk through the quaint town leads to ShoeBooties Cafe' where many familiar faces dine on the freshest foods prepared with gourmet expertise. The Henn Theater is only a block away and is rumored to be the longest running single movie theater in the county. The shops of historic Murphy offer something interesting and unique for everyone. Clothing boutiques for all ages, antiques and collectibles, Native American art, local artist commons and even an old fashioned soda fountain at Parkers Drug store. Saturdays bring a Farmers Market full of fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, plants and local handmade arts and crafts.
Your summer afternoons and week-ends can be filled with boating on one of the many pristine lakes in the area such as Hiwassee, Fontana, Nantahala or Appalachia. The United States Forestry Service lands surround the lakes so it is as if you have turned back the clock to a quieter time. You can watch as eagles and hawks fly above and can even see deer swimming across the lake. With hundreds of miles of hiking trails through thousands of acres of Forest Service lands such as Hanging Dog Campground, Fires Creek Recreation Area and Standing Indian Campground, you will never tire of the scenery and are constantly amazed at the beauty.
Whitewater rafting for any level enthusiast is here. With the Nantahala River and the Ocoee River only 30 minutes in either direction from the center of town, we have access to two of the best Whitewater Rivers in the Southeast. If fishing is your choice of outdoor activity you will find many miles of streams and creeks to test your fly fishing skills. The area enjoys both hatchery supported as well as native fish. If lake fishing is more to your liking, lakes Chatuge, Nottley, Blue Ridge, Hiawassee, Appalachia, Fontana and Santeetlah will not disappoint you!
If fishing, hiking or boating is not up your alley try a beautiful trip on the Smokey Mountain Railway. What a wonderful way to view the fall leaves! One of the routes winds along the Nantahala River as well as Lake Fontana. Golfing on a mountain course is a wonderful way to spend a day. With several to choose from in the area, this is a golfers paradise. Cherokee Hills, Brasstown Valley Resort and Butternut Creek are popular courses for locals and vacationers.
