Leaf Peeping!

Fall has FINALLY arrived in Western North Carolina! We had a low the other morning of about 46 degrees and the upper 30’s are coming next weekend! That should accelerate with the coming cooler temps! That cool mountain air is so refreshing after a long summer of 90 degree temps and all the rain! Our leaves have just begun to turn and the mountains are showing just a tinge of color. Fall festivals are in full swing! Every weekend is the opportunity to see local craftsman and buy some of the most unique gifts and home décor! Leaf peeping will be in full swing in just a few weeks as folks head to the mountains to see the fall foliage. Plan a trip now! Our local waterfalls and hiking trails are perfect this time of year with the cooler temps.

One of the most beautiful things to do in the area is to drive the Cherohala Skyway! The views are absolutely stunning and it can be a loop that brings you right back into Murphy. There are many safe areas to pull off the road and enjoy that view. Be sure to stop at the Cherohala Skyway Visitors Center. Unique gifts and an awesome little museum are located in Tellico Plains at the beginning or the end of the skyway drive.

WayahBald is another delightful drive. You can also hike this one! Just outside of Andrews is Junaluska Road. That will take you to Wayah Road. This is a beautiful drive as it winds its way up the mountain. All ages can enjoy this as you can drive straight to the observation fire tower! This is a phenomenal view at any time of year but the fall is just stunning!

Panther Top Lookout Tower can be a hike OR if you time it just right, an easy drive to the top and the tower! On these Dates the tower is open in 2018. You can drive up and climb the tower for fantastic views. Hours are 10AM until 4 PM. This is close to Murphy and well worth the drive to see the view. Don’t miss this short window of opportunity to see Murphy and the surrounding areas from Panther Top!

Cherokee Scout with Halloween events Many downtown business participate in this Halloween event! Murphy PD blocks off some roads for safety and fun will be had by all! Bring your kids or just come and watch the youngsters in costume! Hiawassee Dam High school is hosting a Trunk or Treat for local kids! Candy, face painting and a carved pumpkin contest! Many of the local churches also offer a Trunk or Treat for the kids. This provides a safe place to enjoy the holiday and in the mountains, a relatively level playing field!
